Chowan County was primarily a farming county with many professionals such as blacksmiths, cobblers, etc., getting more income from farming than their trade. The most common crops included corn, cotton, oats, sweet potatoes, wheat, peas, and Irish potatoes. The county only had four manufacturing firms; those include “Edenton Cotton Mills,” “Wilks Veneer Co,” “Branning Manufacturing Co,” and “M.G. Brown.” As of today, the largest employment sectors are health care and retail.
